ProFuturo is an education programme launched in 2016 by Telefónica Foundation and “La Caixa” Foundation, whose mission is to narrow the education gap in the world by providing quality digital education for children in vulnerable environments in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. In line with Goal 4 of the United Nations’ 2030 sustainable development agenda on access to equitable and inclusive quality education for all, ProFuturo aspires to become a world reference for transformation and innovation in education, improving the education of millions of children through technology.

The hallmarks of ProFuturo, one of the largest digital education initiatives in the world, are quality, sustainability over time, and access to all corners of the world, whether in urban, rural or remote areas or conflict zones. To achieve this, its education solution can be adapted to any environment and context both with and without an Internet connection. The ultimate aim is to deliver the best education to 25 million children in vulnerable areas by 2030.

This proposal has a universal vocation and incorporates, in an interrelated way, technologies, educational resources and teaching-learning methodologies designed to empower teachers and provide students with training in skills and competences for their personal and professional future.

ProFuturo has been an educational laboratory from the start, offering an innovative, personalized and flexible education proposal based on the accumulated experience of Fundación Telefónica, which for over ten years has been working on social intervention programs with children in vulnerable environments in Latin America.

Since 2012, 3.8 million children have benefited from the Telefónica Foundation’s projects, mainly in Latin America. ProFuturo, in collaboration with “La Caixa” Banking Foundation, reached a total of 10 million child beneficiaries by the end of 2019.

ProFuturo is a universal education programme built on robust partnerships. ProFuturo seeks agreements with local agents to implement the program in each country, as well as with international companies, institutions and agents who support the initiative on a grand scale. ProFuturo opens the door to institutions, organizations or companies –public or private– who want to join the initiative, with the aim of recruiting the cooperation of an ever greater number of entities each year to work toward improving education in vulnerable areas.

ProFuturo has signed partnership agreements with more than 60 local, national and international partners.

Our challenge

To close the education gap in the world through quality digital education

for 25 million children by 2030

Through a digital and integral educational solution that combines both teaching and learning methods, modular and adapted to each environment and context, ProFuturo focuses its efforts on ensuring that teachers have good training and the best tools to provide quality education to children in vulnerable areas and thus close the education gap worldwide.

ProFuturo in ten key messages

1. EDUCATION TO CLOSE THE EDUCATION GAP

ProFuturo works to close the education gap by offering children in vulnerable areas a quality digital education. Through digital education, children in the most vulnerable areas can access the same contents as students in other parts of the world.

2. DIGITAL INCLUSION.

Thanks to the use of technology, ProFuturo contributes to closing the digital divide, a threat that particularly concerns children, according to the UNESCO.

3. PERSONALISATION AND MONITORING:

ProFuturo makes it possible to personalize students’ learning by enabling them to progress at their own pace and allowing them to be individually monitored.

4. A TOOL FOR TEACHERS

ProFuturo’s solution is designed as a tool for teachers, who are essentially the key piece in the teaching-  learning  process.

5. LOCAL EMPOWERMENT:

The model for action is intended to train, equip with technology and empower  teachers and schools to guarantee the maximum sustainability and continuity of the project.

6. ECONOMIC GROWTH AND PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE:

As indicated by numerous studies in the  sphere of education and development, quality education accelerates progress.

7. A GLOBAL EDUCATIONAL LABORATORY:

ProFuturo is intended to serve as a vast learning laboratory on the most effective teaching methodologies, so the program can constantly be improved.

8.OPEN TO PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PARTNERS

ProFuturo develops a model that guarantees the sustainability of the program through partnerships with public and  private entities.

9.AN OPPORTUNITY TO TACKLE THE URGENT NEED FOR EDUCATION:

ProFuturo aims to raise awareness of the opportunities technology offers to resolve the urgent need for education in more vulnerable environments.

10.TARGET: TO IMPACT 25 MILLION CHILDREN by 2030:

The mission of ProFuturo is to provide children from vulnerable environments with quality education.

Our commitment in the face of a world crisis

We are currently immersed in a public health emergency caused by COVID-19, which represents a challenge for society as a whole. In the light of this state of affairs, we at the ProFuturo digital programme, which is promoted by Telefónica Foundation and “la Caixa” to reduce the education gap in vulnerable environments, wish to show our commitment to and concern for the situation millions of people are experiencing on account of the crisis and the havoc it is wreaking.  We at ProFuturo are mindful of the fact that countries with vulnerable environments are those that most suffer in difficult times. Education has been affected by the health protection measures adopted to avoid the virus spreading more quickly. This greatly impacts on millions of young children who are living in risk situations: children to whom ProFuturo has been fully committed since the start of our activity back in 2016.

Our commitment to reduce the education gap through digital education makes more sense than ever today. Our remote work is done from Spain, providing the necessary technical support and accompaniment to our partners who are working at the schools that use our digital education programme, which works both online and offline in over 30 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.

Companies and institutions must at this moment in time work jointly and strive to act swiftly and responsibly to combat the consequences of this global health emergency.

Education is a universal right. ProFuturo makes available its comprehensive education programme to teachers and students alike, providing them with digital tools to facilitate those in member schools to carry on with both teaching and learning activities as much as possible.

We are working, and will continue to do so with our partners and allies, to contribute to avoiding any worsening of the current education gap in this scenario and to helping millions of children to continue with their education as a key tool to an opportunity filled future.  We are collaborating in the dissemination of prevention measures against pandemic infection in the schools of the over 30 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America where we operate.
